That one time we accidentally hitchhiked… and didn't get killed… or kidnapped…

Please pardon my multi-sweater, super-zippered layered look.  I swear, I had a cute outfit on underneath it all, but it was soooooo cold!

Out intention was to hop on a boat and sail to Malta's sister island of Gozo, but it was soooooooo windy, that all the tours were canceled.  We ended up on a harbor tour around Malta (not worth it on it's own… only did it because it was free with the purchase of a Gozo tour, and who doesn't want to spend some free time on a boat?).  Unfortunately, I left my nautical-themed pashmina afghan at home, so I was a little ice cube on the boat and didn't take any photos.

Upon shivering right off of the boat, we hopped onto the nice warm bus (remember, you can get a 7-day bus pas for 6.50 Euros) and headed south to the "Blue Grotto."  It took forever.  We had to switch buses in Mdina and then decided to hop off in the middle of nowhere to look at some prehistoric temples that we couldn't afford to get in to, waited another 40 minutes for the next bus and finally made it to the blue lagoon.  It was definitely worth the wait.

I love looking at the sea.  I could stare at it all day.  But this time was especially special, as the sun was in just the right spot and I found a good spot to sit on the rocks and for the first time this whole trip, I was WARM!  And just as I was settling into my rocky little nook and preparing to call it my new home, SB got bored and decided that we simply must go onto another boat to see the clear water and explore some of the coastal caves.  I readily agreed.

It was way cooler than the grottos in Italy last summer!  There were jellyfish everywhere and since I was still warm from my sojourn on the rocks, I was happy.

… and when we got off the boat… a lady gave us free ice cream!  Weeeeee!

Well, friends, that's about when the fun ended.  We got onto another bus to see the Dingli Cliffs, but I think we got a bit jaded, where cliffs are concerned, in Ireland at the Cliffs of Moher.  These cliffs were, well… cool, but not what I was expecting.  And the sun was going down.  And the wind was blowing.  And the next bus wasn't due for an hour.  I pretended to hitchhike several times as we walked to bus stops closer to civilization, but no one stopped.

We reached the edge of a town and settled in for the hour-long wait for the next bus.  I was crouched down and digging for my iPod so I could work on choreographing some new Zumba dances when a car drove past us, stopped, and reversed to us.  It was a man, his wife in the passenger seat, toddler on her lap (no seat belts).  He got out and offered us a ride to the bus stop in the next big city.

Now, normally, I'm pretty trusting, but my hackles went up.  On the flip side, normally SB is totally against agreeing to anything like this, but he was all for it.  We hopped into the back of the SUV and got out own private tour of the southern half of Malta on the way back up to Mdina.

It was a wonderful reminder that there are good, honest, genuinely kind people in the world.

… and now we must pay it forward!

  2. Such Pinterest-worthy views! I'm a sucker for the sea, too. Gotta take advantage of those quiet moments, the waves ceaselessly crashing into the shore.
